John Henry: the legend

The legend of John Henry

John Henry was an American folk hero and steel driver who worked on the construction of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in the late 19th century. He became legendary for his extraordinary strength and speed in driving steel spikes into rocks. The railroad company introduced a steam-powered hammer to replace manual labor, and a contest was held to see who could work faster. John Henry, driven by determination, raced the machine. He won but died of exhaustion, symbolizing the struggle of human labor against automation during the industrialization of America. His story has been celebrated in folklore, songs, and represents the resilience of the working class.
